Deitrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian and pastor in the World War II era, once wrote, "The world of thought is escape; freedom comes only through action. Step out beyond anxious waiting and into the storm of events, carried only by God's command and by your faith..." That brings to my mind a saying from Jesus in Matthew 16:25 "...whoever wants to save his life must lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it."

There are a lot of times in life when we play it safe, hedge, procrastinate, or in other ways avoid stepping out "into the storm of events." We do it out of a constraining fear that robs our life of energy. Bonhoeffer, and Jesus long before him, counseled against such a stance. They advocated risking whatever must be risked to become action-oriented. Jesus told his disciples, "Not every one who says to me 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 7:21).

Jesus calls us to be "doers of the Word." There is a time for study. There is a time for reflection, for pondering, for discernment, but there is also a time when we must act, a time when we must step into "the storm of events" and DO the will of the Father. Bonhoeffer said those moments lead to freedom. Jesus says they lead to life. Let's look for them!

Think about it! Pastor Jeff
